My wife and I love TV. We watch every pilot just to make sure we’re not missing the next great series that everyone will be talking about.
You can image my surprise when I sat down Wednesday night and took in a show that gave me all of the behind-the-scenes scheming and drama in the world of Technology. Of course, I’m talking about Gossip Girl.
Wait a minute, you’re thinking. Isn’t that just a show about a bunch of private school kids living the high life in Manhattan? Isn’t it just a remake of the O.C. set a few thousand miles east?”
Well, yeah, on the surface it is. But, my friends, this show is an allegory, or as my high school English teacher used to say, “it’s one big honkin’ metaphor!”
Gossip Girl is really about the companies and people that shape our lives – the titans of modern technology and the internet.
Don’t believe me? Let’s walk through this show character-by-character, shall we?
Serena van der Woodsen is the beautiful heroine of the show. She disappeared for a while, but now she’s back and everyone’s worried that she’s going to take over their market, I mean, their boyfriend. Who does Serena represent? Of course, none other than Google.
Dan Humphrey is not one of the super-rich kids like Serena, but we know that he’s actually the coolest kid of all, deep down inside. While the rich kids are going to their Ivy league schools and doing the same thing they’ve always done, Dan is going to to think *cough* different(ly). Dan is obviously supposed to be Apple.
Nate Archibald is the super-rich kid who’s desperately trying to break out of his moneyed straight-jacket and develop something that is truly original for the first time in his life. I needn’t go on. Nate is clearly standing in for Microsoft.
Blair Waldorf is Serena’s former best friend. She’s actually better looking than Serena, but nobody else seems to see it that way. So, she’s a little jeolous. Serena’s wondering why she didn’t take out Blair when she had the chance. At least, that’s the story if you read between the lines. No doubt about it, Blair’s Yahoo.
Jenny Humphries is Dan’s little sister and a freshman at their school. This one’s a little tougher to figure out, but if you think about it, she represents hopeful tech startups just making their way into our lives.
Chuck Bass is Nate’s best friend. He’s also filthy rich, but unlike Nate, he’s a very bad guy. Chuck’s what’s known as a composite character, representing all that is evil in our fine technology world. Of course, I’m talking about the Spammers.
Finally, there’s Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl is the show’s narrator whose website gathers and disseminates the dirt about everyone else via text message. This one is so obvious I’ll probably embarrass you by even typing it. But, just for that record: Gossip Girl is Digg. What’s amazing is that it’s not the old Digg, but the new, improved Digg, with social networking features! Clearly these guys had some inside knowledge as the show must have been written months ago!
SPOILER ALERT: don’t even thinking about reading this next part if you haven’t seen the premier. It airs again on Sunday at 8/7 Central.
In the opening episode, Serena (Google) comes back to town and is set to dominate the world, I mean, Manhattan social life. She makes a few mistakes (YouTube), but you just know that the town (our lives) is hers for the taking. Serena (Google) almost immediately takes a liking to Dan (Apple).
What’s that, you say? Am I sure this is really about Apple & Google? They don’t seem that close in “real life.”
Really now. Guess who’s ranked #1 for the term “Mac” on Google? Yahoo sure doesn’t see it that way.
One of the obvious tip-offs for me that this was a thinly disguised metaphor was the on-again / off-again romance between Microsoft and Yahoo, a/k/a “Nate” and “Blair.” Especially when Nate’s dad tried to force them to be together just so he could make more money. That was almost too transparent for my taste.
Then there was the sub-plot with Chuck (the Spammer) trying to force himself on Serena (Google). We all knew that Chuck didn’t have a chance to win that battle. Unfortunately, I have a feeling Chuck isn’t going away anytime soon.
Wait a minute, you say. On the show, Serena and Nate had an ill-advised fling that sent Serena packing off to boarding school? Google and Microsoft never had a fling, did they? In fact, Google is trying to destroy Microsoft’s cash machine, one little web app at a time.
Folks, that a little something called artistic license. Sheesh, if they made it exactly like the real life companies’ stories don’t you think there would be lawsuits?
So why go through all the trouble of writing this as a teen drama set in New York instead of a business show set in Silicon Valley? First there was the little matter of getting people to actually watch the show.
But, I think there’s a larger issue at play. The brave producers behind this show are taking on some pretty powerful vested interests. Sometimes it’s better to throw the big guys off your trail a little bit. If you’ll recall, this is exactly what happened with a little book about animals on a farm.
So, if you want to know what’s really going on in the world we all inhabit, you won’t get the inside scoop on Techcrunch, TechMeme or even Digg. What you really need to do is tune in each Wednesday at 8/ 7 Central on the CW, for the next episode of Gossip Girl.

B & S (as they are refered in the show) are what we like to call “frenemies”. Formerly BFF, but with social ranking struggles. Before S left for boarding school (have a baby? abortion? who knows…?) she was the Queen Bee and B was the Sidekick. When S left, B took over as Queen. Interpret geekily if you want.
